Overview

The Certificate III in Civil Construction is the trade-level qualification for skilled civil construction workers. It builds on entry-level skills with the technical knowledge needed to carry out a range of civil works, including earthworks, drainage, road construction and site set-out.

Who it’s for

Experienced civil construction workers looking to formalise their skills, Certificate II graduates ready to step up, and workers seeking a broader, trade-level qualification.

What you’ll learn

  • Applying WHS and environmental requirements on site
  • Reading and interpreting plans and specifications
  • Levelling and site set-out
  • Specialisation streams in road construction and maintenance, pipe laying and drainage, and concreting
  • Working with plant and equipment and coordinating with operators
  • Communicating and working in a team

This qualification is made up of 15 units of competency (5 core and 10 elective), with electives chosen to suit your specialisation.

Delivery and duration

Delivered through a blend of face-to-face training at our Bradfield facility and workplace-based training and assessment. Typical duration is 12 months, or up to 24 months as a traineeship. Experienced workers may complete sooner through Recognition of Prior Learning.

Entry requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years, or 16 years for traineeship enrolments
  • Construction Induction Card (White Card)
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to read plans and complete site documentation (an LLN assessment is completed at enrolment)
  • Current employment or work placement in civil construction is strongly recommended, as many units are assessed on site
  • A Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Pathways

Graduates may progress to RII40720 Certificate IV in Civil Construction. Job roles may include civil construction worker, pipe layer, road construction worker or leading hand.
